Project: A proposal to save Christchurch Cathedral
Client: Sir Miles Warren, Architect
With the cathedral in ruins and under threat of demolition following the 2010-2011 Christchurch earthquakes, and insufficient church funds to either fully restore the original or do justice to a contemporary new cathedral, Sir Miles enlisted our help in developing and visualising his more affordable approach; where the stone base of the existing cathedral would be saved but new lightweight timber structure used to replace the rest.
This was intended to improve on the existing sight lines and acoustics yet still adhere to a visibly Gothic structural expression.
